Spring is in full swing, and summer will be here before you know it. That means that many North Carolinians will be heading out on vacation at some point in the near future. If you plan to head out of town, you might be wondering what to do about your HVAC system while you’re gone.
First of all, you should not turn off your HVAC system altogether when you go on vacation. In the cold months, this can cause your pipes to freeze; in the warm months, this can cause condensation (and then possibly mold) to form in your home. Instead of turning your HVAC system off, adjust it several degrees to save energy and money while you’re away.
During the summer, you should set your temperature no higher than 84 degrees while you’re gone. If you just plan to be gone a day or two, then you should only set your thermostat a degree or two higher than what you usually do.
If you have a programmable thermostat, you can set it to return to the normal temperature a day or even a few hours before you plan to get home. That way, when you arrive, it will be nice and comfortable for you.
Programmable thermostats are also great for changing the day-to-day temperature in your home. For example, you can set the thermostat to go up (or down) a degree or two each day while you’re at work. Or, you can program it to lower the temperature around your bedtime, since studies show that cooler temperatures are better for sleeping.
All in all, just remember that turning off your HVAC system completely when you go out of town can cost you more money in the long run, on repairs, than it will save you on energy costs.
