Much of Eastern NC is experiencing a sneak peek of spring weather this week, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. This warmer weather might make you want to switch your heat to AC, but we think you should wait a little while.
Switching back and forth between heat and AC can make your utility bills spike and can also put  a strain on your HVAC system. So, when you experience a few days of warm weather in the winter, keep the heat on, but just turn it down a few degrees. If you’re still hot after that, use ceiling or box fans to cool down your home. You can also close your blinds and curtains during the day to help keep your home cooler.
So, when should you turn on your AC for good? In March and April, NC typically starts to experience consistent warmer weather. Once we’ve had a week or so of warm weather in a row, then it might be time to start thinking about switching your heat over to air conditioning. Keep in mind though, that if we experience a few cold days in the spring, you shouldn’t then switch back over to heat. Instead, use natural light and extra clothing layers to keep yourself warm.
Springtime is also the perfect time to have routine HVAC maintenance performed. That way, if anything needs to be fixed, it can be repaired before the really hot summer months hit. The last thing that you want is for your AC to stop working in the middle of a heat wave.
